Return to Minnesota

Hey everyone, we just wanted to share a few pictures with you from our trip to Northern Minnesota, Labor Day weekend.
While we do love Minnesota and we love to travel there the trip did have special purpose. Adriana, a good friend of mine from graduate school graduated this past summer and will soon be returning to Costa Rica as a professor at the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. Karen and I wanted to do something special for her since she had given us a great tour of Costa Rica when we had visited. So we decided to take her to a place that we really enjoy.

We started the weekend in Duluth and then spent Sunday and Monday driving up Hwy 61 along lake superior visiting state parks and local restaurants. We eventually made it to the Canada border. Although with no passports, and no VISA for Adriana, we had to stay on the US side.

Wanted to share this unique picture with you. It is from a state park about 40 minuets south of Grand Portage. It was a short 1.5 mile hike off of Hwy 61 to this water fall. This waterfall is called the Devils Kettle. Half of the water coming down the river goes over the water fall and the other half goes down into the hole on the left and no one has figured out where the water comes out. Park rangers have tried adding dye to the water and looking for it but to no avail. They assume it goes underground and comes out somewhere in Lake Superior -- this seems logical.

A beautiful shot of the Superior coastline. We were there a little too early for the fall colors but it was still a great view.

Till next time --
